I am the president of the American Booksellers Foundation for Free Expression (ABFFE) and the author of two books, "From the Palmer Raids to the Patriot Act: A History of the Fight for Free Speech in America" (Beacon Press, 2007) and "Alfred E. Smith: The Happy Warrior" (Hill and Wang, 2002).

I am married to Pat Willard, author of several food histories, including the forthcoming, America Eats!  On the Road with the W.P.A.--The Fish Fries, Box Supper Socials, and the Chittlin' Feasts that Define Real American Food (Bloomsbury).

We live in Brooklyn with our sons (ages 21 and 26).
